3:10 to Yuma

So last night I decided to see a movie. I hadn’t been in a while because frankly since the Bourne Ultimatum was released, there hasn’t been anything worth seeing, at least not in my humble opinion. After reading the synopses and looking at the reviews of some of the movies that are currently playing, my husband and I decided to see the latest Russell Crowe film, 3:10 to Yuma. Surprisingly, it kept me captivated.

Russell Crowe

3:10 to Yuma is your typical shoot ‘em up, cowboy ridin’, good guy vs. bad guy, kinda film. It takes place in the period in history after the Civil War out west in the desserts and canyons of Arizona. Dan Evans (played by Christian Bale of Batman Begins) is a former soldier for the North down on his luck with a missing leg, a family to feed, and owing money to those in which he borrowed it from to keep his ranch running and in tact. Infamous outlaw, Ben Wade (played by Russell Crowe), and his band of not so merry men have plagued the southwest with their robbing, stealing, and killing. When Dan goes to pay his debt to Mr. Butterfield, THE business mogul trying to get a rail line built in their town, it is discovered that not only is Ben in town but he’s also in the same hotel that Dan and Butterfield are standing in. Butterfield, the bounty hunter Byron McElroy (played by Peter Fonda), and various members of the law, surround the hotel and arrest Wade. However, they must transport Wade to Yuma to catch the 3:10. It’s a dangerous trip and Evans offers his assistance but for a wage, one that will help his family get back on his feet.

And I’ll leave the description of the story there. This way y’all will be encouraged to see how the story turns out for yourselves.

My take – I liked it. I’m not a HUGE fans of westerns and to be honest, what drew me to this film were the lead actors, Crowe and Bale. Joining the cast was a suprise performance by Peter Fonda as well….and Peter did what Peter does, he played his part to perfection. There’s a bit more blood and guts than I like to see but the story, coupled with the direction, cinematography, dialogue, and the acting outweighs those gorry moments. I see this film as receiving Academy nominations in varous areas. Hollywood.com gave it 3 stars. I tend to agree.

Until next time,

Lisa
