American Gangster – Wait for the Video

Last weekend I couldn’t WAIT to get to my Blog to review Gone Baby Gone. This weekend – not the same effect, unfortunately. As a matter of fact, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t much into blogging (I think I needed a bit of a break.). Well, add to that my reaction to the movie I did see, and there’s not much excitement there.

I saw the new release American Gangster. The title alone constitutes negativity – it’s about a GANGster. That’s no fun. Not to say that the title “Gone Baby Gone” is much better but the difference is Gone was a heartwarming, heart-wrenching story with a message. Gangster is just about…well…being a gangster. In my book, there’s nothing heartwarming about that. So, what’s my review. Honestly, I’d give it 2 out of 4 stars. Let me tell you why.

The script is very good. The direction – also very good. The acting – equally as good. The thing is, it’s all just “good”. Not fantastic. Not fabulous. Not outstanding. Good.

Denzel Washington

Now, I love Denzel Washington. He’s one of my favorite actors EVER. In fact, one of my favorite movies that I watch over and over and over again is Remember the Titans. The role he played reminded me of the way I used to coach – tough. “I am the law.” That’s a GREAT line and one I used to live by as the coach that I was. I loved how Denzel portrayed that role.

And he was good in this one too. Denzel did what Denzel does and as a result, he very well could be up for an academy award nomination when the time comes. That wouldn’t surprise me.

However, the movie overall, not one of my favorites. Perhaps it was the subject matter -being a gangster and living the life of a gangster. It doesn’t appeal to me. Truthfully, there were two reasons I saw this film – Denzel and the potential for academy nominations. I wanted to see what could be nominated. I’ve already mention that Denzel could receive a Best Actor nod…but that’s it for me. Nothing else was that “stand out”.

So, do I recommend American Gangster? Only if you like Denzel. Outside of that, wait for the video release.

Until next time, see YOU at the movies,

Lisa :)
