Will the WGA Strike Affect You? It Depends…
For those of you that DIDN’T know, the Writer’s Guild of America is on strike. Why should you care? Truthfully. You shouldn’t…at least when it comes to your favorite flicks. The WGA strike really shouldn’t affect movie production. However, if you want your Jay Leno or David Letterman to be fresh and new, you can forget that very soon. Both Jay & Dave will begin running re-runs in about a week’s time or less depending on how much their writers have accomplished up until now.
It’s a sorry state of affairs when production has to stop because a key element is not available. The writers are key. Yet, I completely understand why they are walking the picket lines. Just like anyone else in the business they deserve a piece of the pie, especially since there wouldn’t be a pie if it weren’t for the scripts.
Writers get their due in every medium EXCEPT the online media explosion. The availability of downloadable broadcast television shows, made for online viewing only shows, downloadable movies, etc. helps to make the moula for the studios and their executives. The writers don’t get any of that as it stands now. Their contract was up and so why not take advantage of tiiming and make it happen for them? However, not everyone saw it that way and as a result the WGA union found it necessary to strike. Take THAT Hollywood!
Sounds to me like a good time to go to the movies. Maybe I’ll see YOU at the movies this weekend!

My knee-jerk reaction to this whole debacle was “get real – these Hollywood people need to get a life and stop whining”. After some consideration, I’m finding myself a lot more sympathetic to the writers. Our society doesn’t give writers nearly the credit they deserve, and I’d much rather see the writers profit than some silly actor or actress with a pretty face.
