Box Office Results for Thanksgiving Weekend 2007!
| NOVEMBER 23 – 25, 2007 | ||||
| Rank | Film Title | Gross | Weeks | Cume |
| 1 | ENCHANTED | 35.33 | 1 | 50.0 |
| 2 | THIS CHRISTMAS | 18.60 | 1 | 27.1 |
| 3 | BEOWULF | 16.24 | 2 | 56.4 |
| 4 | HITMAN | 13.04 | 1 | 21.0 |
| 5 | BEE MOVIE | 12.01 | 4 | 112.1 |
This is an interesting list of results. Three of the Top 5 are in the first week of release and two of which are also holiday movies.
Impressive at #1 is the critically acclaimed, Enchanted, a story that combines fantasy (in the form of animation) with reality and has an all-star cast headed by Amy Adams, James Marsden, Susan Sarandon, and Patrick Dempsey with the incomparable Julie Andrews as the Narrator.
This Christmas starring Chris Brown and Regina King lands at #2 in its first week in release. With some major blockbusters about to be released within the next couple of weeks, look for it to drop fairly rapidly. The critics haven’t praised Christmas very highly either.
The technological epic based on the English myth, Beowulf, falls to #3 after only 2 weeks in release. With an impressive cast headed by Ray Winstone (in the title role), Anthony Hopkins, Robin Wright Penn, John Malkovich, and Angelina Jolie, Beowulf aims to capture the audience with its special effects and sexy characters. As with This Christmas, the critics haven’t given this one much to write home about, probably the reason it fell back a couple spots.
Hitman is interesting because it’s the first movie based on a successful video game franchise that found its way from the video game screen to the silver screen fairly quickly. It’s violent and for a holiday season filled with “feel good movies”, I personally don’t see this one lasting too long in the Top 5.
Did you notice what movie rounds out our Top 5, this week? Not a shocker – Bee Movie. Once again, a family-friendly film and only in its fourth week of release, it’s not suprising to see this critically acclaimed film still in the Top 5. However, as with This Christmas, with the release of several blockbusters over the next couple of weeks and an additional holiday movie, Bee just may continue to fall. BUT, it won’t fall far. I predict it will be in the Top 10 for many more weeks to come.
Surprisingly, the critically acclaimed release August Rush didn’t even make it into the Top 5 in its first week. It debuted at #7, just behind Fred Claus. Starring Robin Williams, Keri Russell, Johnathan Rhys Meyers, and young Hollywood star, Freddie Highmore (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland), Rush is a story about young love, deceit, and extraordinary gifts. It’s the extraordinary gifts and the child that displays them, that brings the heart of the story to the forefront. Maybe there are too many “feel good” movies out there right now, which led to its debut rating?
And that’s it for this week. See YOU at the movies!
