The Munchkins FINALLY Get Their Star!

MunchkinWell, how ’bout that?! Nearly 70 years after the release of one of the most popular films of all time, 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, the actors that played the Munchkins of Munchkinland finally received a collective star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. Seven of the surviving Munchkins were there to receive their star. Now THAT’s a Thanksgiving gift!

“We love you; you have touched our hearts,”

said former Munchkin Mickey Carroll, 88.

Even former star, Judy Garland’s (who died of a drug overdose in 1969) son, Joey Luft was in attendance as the Munchkins celebrated their star.

I used to watch The Wizard of Oz every year around this time because it was a network staple. Now, I just catch it when I can. Still, I love those “little guys”, the Munchkins, and I am so thrilled that they too finally got their due!

I’m so pleased the Munchkins finally got their star. But… I need the movie queen to get the bottom of a very old rumor. Whatever you call it… it seems many people believe a “hopeful munchkin” who was never hired to take part in this historical film… ended his life on the set. Yes, It’s hard to believe… I do not make the stuff up. Apparently, according to folklore of this film it happened while cameras were rolling. It supposed to be in one of the scenes with the flying monkeys. Can we ever find the truth?

Jim’s “Wizard of Oz” page (http://www.geocities.com/hollywood/hills/6396/oz-lore.htm) says:

This so-called scene is said to have taken place during the Tin Woodman sequence in the film when Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Woodman head off down the yellow brick road. In the background a large object can be seen. If you watch the film on a big screen or with a good quality video/DVD you will see that it’s nothing more than a large bird flapping its wings. Most critics and fans alike agree it’s a crane. Several birds from the Los Angeles Zoo were brought onto the set during this sequence to give it a more outdoors feel. One of the best explanations I’ve seen for this “rumor” can be found on the internet at: http://www.snopes.com/movies/films/ozsuicid.htm.

Hoax, from people who make their lives knowing everything Oz.

OH MY GOSH! Admittedly, I had never heard of this. Now, I’m going to go back and watch the movie this weekend. I’ll do some “investigating” later when I see the “evidence”. :D
