I Am Legend – I Am Kinda Creeped Out

I mean…how else can I describe my reaction?  Truly.  It’s actually a good movie in the sense that as a viewer you tend to wonder what you would do if you were in the lead character’s situation.  Picture this…

You are a brilliant scientist, one that is revered by the world over.  It is anticipated that you will help stop the man-made plague that is about to unleash itself in the confines of New York City.  So, in the 10 minutes remaining before all of New York is shut off to the outside world (and when I say ”shut off” I mean bridges are bombed, tunnels are sealed, air space is defended, etc), you hurriedly move to get your family out of town.  Then all hell breaks loose.  The plague spreads but you are the last remaining human standing….well except for those that mutated (the “Lurkers”) because of the virus, in which case you don’t want to be anywhere near them.  For three years, you make every attempt to contact the outside world through radio messages.  Each day you sit by the pier at high noon when it’s safest hoping that at least one person has heard your cry, each day you document the findings of each anecdote you try (on rats and the mutated humans) and each day you are sure to be home before the sun sets so that you are safe…well as safe as you can be from the Lukers that want to come after you.  Will anyone hear your cry?  Will you find the cure before it’s too late?

That’s the premise to the story.  I Am Legend is rated PG-13… and for good reason.  While the action sequences are will-smith.jpgquite intense (Will Smith speeds his car through the deserted-overgrown-with-weeds streets of New York), there are some violent scenes that tend to get a bit gory and scary all at the same time (a buck is attacked and eaten, the mutated humans come out in droves in two sequences, etc).  Let’s just say I did cover my eyes a time or two myself.

When the movie was over, I was amazed at the number of parents that brought young children.  Now, I realize Will Smith draws big…usually…but as a parent, I would’ve done my homework (i.e. watched the trailer online or read the reviews).  Then, I would’ve discovered that the level of violence was not something for any child under 13.  Heck, I’m not entirely sure it was for any teenager period.  In fact, I counted two parents that had  to leave with their children from the packed theater we sat in.  Though the theater was packed, and it was only two parents, still that should tell you something.

Legend is not for the weak-hearted.  That’s for sure!  However, if you like this flavor of science fiction and you don’t mind being scared out of your pants (at times), this might be a movie for you.  Judging by story, acting (Will Smith), cinematography, and direction, I’d give this movie

Movie ReelMovie Reel 1/2 reels

Until next time, see YOU at the movies!
