DECEMBER 21 – 25, 2007
Rank Film Title Gross Weeks Cume
1 NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS 65.44 1 65.4
2 I AM LEGEND 47.69 2 151.0
3 ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS 38.61 2 94.5
4 CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR 15.95 1 16.0
5 SWEENEY TODD 13.64 1 13.6

Good Golly Miss Molly!  And no, I’m not lipsyncing to Jerry Lee Lewis either.  I’m just SHOCKED at the Box Office Results for this weekend.  I knew there would be some fluctuating in the rankings but I had no idea that they would fluctuate this much!  Maybe my mind was so geared to the Golden Globe – highly anticipated films of Charlie Wilson’s War, Sweeney Todd, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story that I overlooked the idea that the viewing public prefers the Box Office Blockbuster-type films instead?  Yeah.  That’s it.

Charlie, Sweeney, and Hard all debuted at numbers 4, 5, and 8 respectively.  Legend and Alvin maintained their positions but each fell a notch to 2 and 3, respectively.  As predicted, The Golden Compass fell to the #9 spot.  However, not as predicted, Enchanted fell to the #7 spot, sliding out of the Top 5 for the first time in its 5-week run (Personally, I was kinda sad about that. It’s such a feel-good movie that you want to see it continue to do well!)

So, what was I surprised about that I should not have been?  I really thought that with the buzz surrounding Charlie Wilson’s War and Sweeney Todd that those two movies would have cracked the Top 5 at higher positions than they did.  It turns out I was wrong but as I said earlier, apparently I just wasn’t thinking.  The viewing public would rather see MEGA movies like National Treasure: Book of Secrets and I Am Legend in lieu of award-nominated films during the Holiday weekend.  Whoopsie!  WHAT was I thinking?

Here’s a surprise that you can’t see (based on the fact that this chart only lists the Top 5) – Juno, nominated for 3 Golden Globes, moved a notch to #10.  That’s not the surprise.   It’s jump is a product of a 140% increase since the nominations were handed out.

This weekend I plan on seeing Charlie Wilson’s War because I absolutely love pretty much anything with Tom Hanks or anything with Julia Roberts.  Having the two of them in the same film…now you KNOW it’s gotta be good!

See YOU at the movies!

Lisa :)

Good post, I’m not surprised about National Treasure: Book of Secrets leading the box office, it has a wide fan base to where some of the other movies have a less targeted audience. I’m surprised that I am Legend is still number 2; lately I heard it’s just terrible. At some point I’m going to see all of these movies but National Treasure: Book of Secrets is the only one I’m thinking good enough to go see now and not wait for the DVD. I could be wrong, I’ll let you know after I see it.

The last movie I think I saw at the theater was Knocked Up. It’s probably time that I go again

I am so lazy to go to the movies…I love to but it’s such a time committment! I am really into netflix…can watch a movie on my couch with a cosmo in hand and laptop if I don’t like the movie…you cant beat that!!! On my list for this weekend is the queen and devil wears prada…I know I am behind!!

Going to the movies is easy for me. I literally can walk to the theater. It’s not a hardship. LOL!

There’s something about seeing a movie on the BIG screen. Most…yeah…you could wait for DVD or In Demand but I don’t know, sometimes a night out with the girls to see the latest chick flick or a date night movie or even going by yourself can be relaxing. I love going to the movies…obviously! :)

I’m curious to hear your reactions to Sweeney Todd and Dewey Cox, neither of which I have seen or plan to see, but my daughters have. I’m also going to pass on Chipmunks and Golden Compass. No Country for Old Men was an excellent movie, and Enchanted was cute.
