Gone Before His Time
I usually don’t post twice in one day and I certainly don’t like to post this kind of subject matter shortly after such a positive post as was detailed in my Oscar nominations piece. However, the news of the death of a promising young actor warranted me to post again.
Heath Ledger, 28, best known for his Academy nominated performance in the break-through controversial film, Brokeback Mountain, was found dead today of an apparent overdose of over the counter sleeping medication (as reported by WNBC-4 in New York).
Ledger was one of those actors that you knew had the “it” factor. He was young with loads of talent and let’s not forget, he was easy on the eyes. He had everything going for him, including a beautiful two year-old daughter (with former girlfriend and co-star, Michelle Williams). In his short career, film-goers first noticed him in the teen flick Ten Things I Hate About You. He went on to star in the 2001 medieval film, A Knight’s Tale. But, it wasn’t until his turn in Brokeback that the critics took notice of his acting mettle….and quite frankly so did I.
I mean, the guy was cute. That much I noticed… and that much I’ll be honest with you about. And that accent – to die for! I tell ya what, though. I put all of that aside once I saw him portray an embattled gay cowboy alongside Jake Gyllenhall in Brokeback Mountain. Stunning. Absolutely stunning…and powerful too, which is why this is so sad.
Ledger is starring in the latest in the new Batman series, The Dark Knight, as The Joker. The movie is currently in post-production.
Once again, another young promising Hollywood star snuffed out before his time. May he rest in peace.

It’s always a terrible thing when celebs take their own lives with drugs… especially when they have children. It makes you wonder why a person who has so much going for them doesn’t appreciate what they have. I just feel bad for the children, because they are the ones who will live with the repercussions.
The media should not to make a hero out of a person who commits suicide through overdosing. However, it is inevitable that Ledger will be given the same kind of icon status as Belushi, Presley, etc. What kind of message does that give America’s youth?
