The Oscars Are Coming…or Are They?

I wish I could say that I’m excited for the Oscar nominations this year but it’s hard to be when even the possibility of a traditional Hollywood gala hangs in the balance.  But, with that being said, I found myself glued to the Today Show this morning, once again, as they gracioiusly captured the nominations LIVE.  The esteemed actress, Kathy Bates, joined the President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Sid Ganis in the wee morning hours as they read the nominees in the major categories.

While I’m not surprised at the pictures (No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood) that were nominated for numerous awards each, I am a bit surprised at the fact that both films represent subject matter that is not of a traditional academy choice.  Both are very grim tales (one is a bit bizarre, I venture to say); not the usual Academy fare.

I’m also not that surprised at the seven nominations for Michael Clayton (which I reviewed last fall).  From the Best Actor nod for George Clooney to the supporting nods for both Tilda Swinton and Tom Wilkinson to even the Achivement in Directing nod for Tony Gilroy, though I thought the film was brilliant, I don’t think it deserves to win for Best Motion Picture.  There are several other candidates that better deserve that award.

I was pleased as punch that Amy Ryan received a nod for her incredible portrayal of a strung out drug mamma who’s little girl was kidnapped in the cirtically acclaimed Gone Baby Gone (again, I reviewed).  I’m a bit disappointed that the film didn’t garner additional noms in the major categories as well.

I am also as pleased as punch at the technical achievements that The Bourne Ultimatum  is being recognized for…and rightfully so!

Rather than continue on and on with my ramblings, I’m going to once again defer to the video from the Today Show this morning.

Barring any further complications from the Writer’s Strike, the 80th Annual Academy Awards will be presented on February 24th. I’ll be making my predictions in the coming weeks and on that evening as long as there’s a “real” show, I’ll be posting LIVE. I hope you will join me then. :)

Until next time, see YOU at the movies!

Lisa :)
