In ceremonies held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles this evening, the following SAG film awards were distributed -
Outstanding Performance By a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Ruby Dee for American Gangster
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Javier Bardem for No Country for Old Men
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Lead Role
Julie Christie for Away from Her
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Lead Role
Daniel Day Lewis for There Will Be Blood
Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
No Country for Old Men
Well…I have not seen either of No Country for Old Men or There Will Be Blood so I can’t really say whether or not the actors (or the ensemble) deserved the awards they received. However, based on what I already know of their acting mettle, I’d venture to say that the awards received by Daniel Day Lewis and Javier Bardem were well deserved. They alone make the trailer for each movie look interesting in itself.
In his acceptance speech, Lewis paid homage to fellow thespian (now deceased), Heath Leger. It was a beautiful tribute to an actor who’s gift we will no longer see.
My only complaint tonight (if you can call it that) was that I think Amy Ryan should have won for Gone Baby Gone. Her portrayal of the strung out druggie mamma with the little girl who was kidnapped was so convincing. Not to mention, she was in nearly every scene in that movie whereas though Ruby Dee did an excellent job as the mother of the American Gangster, her role was smaller than that of Amy’s. Congrats to Miss Dee but I think Ms. Ryan should’ve taken home the Actor.
Up next – the Oscars. Let’s see if the SAG awards are any indication of what’s to come on Oscar night!
Until next time, see YOU at the movies!

Daniel Day-Lewis is crazy good in There Will Be Blood. The movie itself is a little out there (in a good way) but you have to see it just for the performance. It carries the whole film.
