The State of Hollywood – Is THIS What We Have to Look Forward To?

(Access Hollywood’s interview with Jodi Foster about upcoming film, Nims Island, courtesy of MSNBC)

I started this blog post with a snippet from something positive.  I needed that and after you read my post, you might need to hit “play” again.

I don’t know if it’s just me but it seems as if the selection of films currently in the theater and those waiting in the wings (no pun intended) is a bit shall I say…dull.  That’s pretty much the reason you haven’t seen me post the “buzz” (with the exception of the occassional rambling) in quite some time.  In my honest and humble opinion there really isn’t much to BUZZ about out there.  Anyone riding the same lame movie wave as me?

Take for instance what’s been in the theaters.  Films such as – Drillbit Taylor, Shutter, 10,000 B.C., Never Back Down, and College Road Trip – starring little known (Joshua Jackson in Shutter or Steven Strait in 10,000 B.C.) or nearly forgotten (Martin Lawrence in College Road Trip or Owen Wilson in Drillbit Taylor) actors just don’t excite me.  And if you look at the reviews of any of those films, apparently they don’t excite anyone else either.

This weekend there are two films being released that have my interest and I hate to say it but (shamelessly) mostly because of the actors in them – 21 and Stop-Loss.  Starring Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey, and Lawrence Fishburne, 21 is the true story of an incredible team of very gifted MIT students who take Vegas for a run for its money.  Stop-Loss is the tale of a soldier (played by Ryan Phillippe) who returns home from a tour in Iraq refusing to return for another war when he is actually called back for battle.  Both movies have mixed reviews.  Personally, I absolutely love Kevin Spacey and will watch just about any movie if he’s in it.  Then of course there’s heart-throb Ryan Phillippe.  YOWZA!  Need I say more?  BUT…am I dying to see either of these films? Nah.  That’s my point.

There isn’t a single film out there now or coming up that I just absolutely have to see.  Is that what we can expect from Hollywood all year long?  Gosh – I hope not.

Until next time, I’ll see YOU at the movies…maybe.

Lisa :)

Oh and by the way, I chose the snippet from Nims only because it’s the closest thing to something to look forward to this spring.

I want to see 21 also but have no desire to see the war movie. Probably because I can’t stand that Ryan guy-I am big Reese fan and he is a cheater…just my opinion!

I thought the same thing about Ryan-we should get “Team Reese” shirts!

Hey, Lisa, you could start reviewing movies already out on DVD…Sure, they may be a bit older but there are plenty of GREAT movies that many people have never seen-if you are going to spend two hours of your life watching a movie, might as well be a good one!-Jessica

Funny you ask. I have actually decided to resort to movies In Demand (I’m too lazy to get to the video store for DVDs and I don’t do Netflix.) I have two reviews of movies from 2007 that I’m still working on. They should be up within the next week or so. But yeah…since I don’t have much to look forward to on the big screen, I might as well make the most of what’s already out there.

As for Mr. Phillippe…yeah, he’s a putz. I don’t disagree there but he’s still easy on the eyes. ;) And he’s actually a good actor too. If he were horrible, I’d tend to follow suit with you both. So being objective in that regard, I’ll still see if what he puts forth on screen is worth it.

Thanks for the convo!

Hi Lisa. Actually, I have no desire to see either movie. I’m not crazy about Ryan, and the previews for 21 seem lackluster (not to mention that all of the MIT students were Asian but aren’t all played by Asians, which didn’t sit well with them). And I just can’t back a movie with the anti-serve-my-country premise. To be fair, I haven’t seen the previews yet, but the description is not appealing to me. You’re right. The movie outlook is bleak right now.
