How Will Hollywood Do in 2009?

It’s anybody’s guess.  Really.  Considering that 2007 ended with a Writer’s Strike prompting 2008 to start off a bit on the slow side and with a potential actor’s strike looming on the horizon as 2009 begins, who knows what the effects will bring?

Today was supposed to be the day a strike authorization ballot was to be cast by the members of the 120,000-strong Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG) but a few of Hollywood’s biggest stars (think George Clooney or Matt Damon) voiced their strong disagreement over the timing saying that they support their union and the issues they have been fighting for (since May 2008), given the state of the current economy, now was not the time to be putting anyone out of work.  So, the strike has been postponed…for now.

Of course, should the actor’s strike at some point it won’t really have much of an impact on those films that are already scheduled to be released, those that are ready for the big screen.  The thing is, because of the writer’s strike of late 2007 to early 2008, the choices for thought-provoking, high-action, comedic, family-oriented or frightening thrillers aren’t nearly as stacked up as they usually are.

I don’t expect much in the early part of the year.  Typically, Hollywood “relaxes” for the first few months and then blows out a few blockbusters as summer gets under way…and that’s when it could get dicey in terms of the quality of those films released.  Then, Hollywood gears up for Golden Globe and Oscar candidates as the fall rolls around and we’re not sure what the choices will be like then either.

So…how will Hollywood do in 2009?  Keep checking back for more news, information, gossip, and reviews on The Buzz.

Until next time, see YOU at the movies….maybe.
