Hannah Montana Vs Fast – Who Will Come Out On Top This Easter Weekend?
Last week, Fast and Furious blew away the box office taking in a whopping $71M. With a production budget of just under $85M, the film is on track to make exceed all expectations. Close behind grossing $33M in box office sales was Parmount’s Monsters Vs Aliens. Not bad for either film, huh? And then comes Hannah Montana, The Movie. Who will come out on top this Easter Weekend?
This is a tough one to predict. Fast and Furious undoubtedly draws on its “I am man. Hear me roar”
factor. Boys, cars, fast cars, a couple of hot chicks. Produced by Hollywood powerhouse, Universal Studios, directed by Justin Lin (he directed another Fast film – The Fast and The Furious – Tokyo Drift), and starring hunky Paul Walker, the sexy Vin Diesel, both back for another weekend drive, and two stunning starlets, Michelle Rodriguez (ABC’s Lost) and Jordana Brewster (CBS’s As The World Turns), it’s got all the elements that cater to the 25-34 set (give or take).
On the other hand, there’s Monsters Vs. Aliens, a nice animated family film starring the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogan (who ironically has ANOTHER movie out this weekend – Observe and Report), and Hugh Laurie (who does not deviate from playing ANOTHER doctor, Dr. Cockroach in this case). It’s pure animated fun when Reese’s character gets hit by a stray meteor that turns her into a monster, is then taken to a secret government compound where all the other monsters are, and together under orders from the President, they must save the world from the aliens. Again, I say it’s a family film. This is a Holiday weekend. What are the chances it could still do very well at the Box Office? Pretty good, if you ask me.
And then there’s Hannah Montana – The Movie starring none other than Hannah herself, Miss Miley Cyrus who alongside her daddy, Billy Ray, together they tell the story of Hannah from a slightly different angle. Just like the highly successful TV series, the film is also produced by Disney. Here you have two main draws – two VERY “main draws” – Disney and Miley.
Say what you want about Miley Cyrus – she’s overindulgent, overexposed, overworked, yadda, yadda, yadda. But, the thing is, she is IT right now. Hannah is hot. Miley is hot. This makes Disney…hot and
with the exception of the equallly successful High School Musical series, Disney hasn’t really been this hot in quite a few years having had to compete with Dreamworks/SKG’s success in the last decade.
So, which film will make the grade this weekend – a movie about fast cars, hot guys, hot chicks or a story about monsters saving the planet or the film that every tween (and teen) girl (not to mention a few boys) have been waiting on pins and needles for? The holiday weekend started with Good Friday, a day when many schools and businesses were closed in observeance of Easter weekend. That gives each film three days to rake in the bucks.
Until next time, see YOU at the movies!
