Is There Credence to the MTV Movie Awards?
Earlier this week, the list of nominees for the annual Golden Popcorn award was released. Leading the pack
– Twilight with seven nominations but coming up just behind with six, my favorite movie of 2008, Slumdog Millionaire.
Twilight. Really?
I shouldn’t diss. I didn’t see the movie. And I shouldn’t diss because the awards are voted on by MTV viewers but I just can’t help myself when there were far better flicks released last year. Then again, that is my humble opinion and if you think of awards, in general, that’s all anyone’s opinion really. I am happy to report that mixed in with Twilight and Slumdog are the likes of Kate Winslet (for The Reader) and Angelina Jolie (for Wanted) as well as Sean Penn (for Milk) all up for the Golden Popcorn.
The MTV Movie Awards are all about fun categories (like “Best Fight”, “Best Kiss”, “Breakthrough Performance”) and I suppose if you take them with a grain of salt, my original question doesn’t matter…or does it?
So, back to that question – is there credence to the MTV Movie Awards? What do you think? Leave your thoughts below. Give me enough to work with and I’ll post a follow up. Who knows – maybe you’ll change my humble opinion.
The MTV Movie Awards will be handed out in Los Angeles on May 31st.
Until next time, see YOU at the movies!
Lisa

Good advice, Jillian. Yeah, you’re right. They’re more for the “fun” categories rather than those “artsy” ones. I may actually watch the show this year just because. We’ll see.
Hi Lisa,
Looks like you’ve got a bone to pick with the MTV Movie Awards and I can appreciate your concern. Truthfully I think there is credence to the awards. Of course they are very differnet from the Oscars because the focus is less about technical skill and more about popular culture. The awards are right in alignment with the MTV crowd and you have to give MTV a break because they are doing all they can to keep their demographic interested. You know, the tweens who have no business watching the show and the teens who have a hankering for the edgy side of life. They’ll be fun to watch but don’t expect the level of professional appreciation offered at other awards events in the Motion Picture Industry.

Talent Man…between you and Jillian, I have to say you have convinced me to change my opinion about them after all. I suppose “pop culture” deserves its place in some way shape or form alongside award ceremonies for technical skill. The music industry has the Grammys AND the American Music Awards so it only make sense for the film industry to ride the pop culture wave too.
Thanks for your insight and perhaps, for setting me straight!

Sometimes the MTV awards give recognition to great performances in genres that aren’t typically rewarded by the Academy (blockbusters or chick flicks– as opposed to art films)… But then again, sometimes they reward Hannah Montana. You have to take them with a grain of salt, I think.
