Box Office Results (12/31/09-1/3/10)
Avatar is kicking some serious butt at the box office and it’s only in its 3rd week of release! It must be those incredible technological advances in the art and future of film-making or perhaps it’s the option of watching it in 3D or in regular format (though I hear 3D also kicks some collective butt as well)? Whatever it is, it’s doing “it” right!
Coming up a close 2nd and 3rd were the latest Robert Downey Jr/Jude Law flick, Sherlock Holmes, and the latest installment in The Chipmunks series – The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel, respectively. Notice how close the numbers were for these two. Wonder what would’ve happened if Avatar wasn’t playing? Would these films still be neck-in-neck or? Hmm…thoughts to ponder.
Rounding out the Top 5 this weekend were two Golden Globe nominated films – the Meryl Streep comedy, It’s Complicated, and Sandra Bullock’s The Blind Side (which really shouldn’t be a surprise).

Avatar is pretty much my favorite movie of the year (I saw it the first weekend it came out last year). It may even be my favorite movie ever. I saw it in 3D at Atlantic Springs and then at the IMax the following weekend!! It was truly incredible in every way. I loved the characters, the environments, the animation, the story – everything!
If you haven’t seen it, yet, I highly advise seeing it at least the first time in 3D (but not in the first few rows at the IMax because it’s kind of nauseating, especially if you’re far-sighted like me – this holds true for all IMax 3D movies if you sit too close).
The Chipmunks movie was great for the kids, but not the greatest entertainment for adults.
I have not seen “Avatar” yet because I’m a little worried about the jerky hand held cam that is used and I get motion sickness. Some tell me it will get to me, some say it is fine.
“Sherlock Holmes” was excellent. I loved every minute of it (and will be reviewing the last three movies I saw this week, including Holmes.)
I’m surprised at “The Chipmunks” as I thought it was horrible.
“Nine” is the movie I’m really anxious to see but it is in select theaters, select cities still. It only has two showings a day at the theater I normally go to.
Jessica…The Blind Side is probably still hanging in because of the press it got on the special 20/20 episode last week – all about the Michael Oher story.
Tara…thanks for the careful reflection on just exactly how to see Avatar. I haven’t seen an IMAX presentation in a while and I forgot the first few rows can get nauseating. Sign me up for a ticket in the back rows.
Michelle…look forward to your Sherlock review! Might want to check out Avatar in the non-3D format too. That might help?
Thanks, Ladies, for the excellent feedback!

LOVED Sherlock Holmes but probably will not see Avatar. Surprised that The Blind Side is still hanging in there. I actually asked Alex last night if he had heard anything about how Invictus was doing-hmmmm… Definitely plan to see Up in the Air, though.
